South West Trip Day 12 Monday May 15, 2017

Today starts in Evanston, WY
And finishes in Elko, NV
Far west edge of Wyoming
Across the Top of Utah and Into Nevada

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
I woke up in Evanston, WY and left about 9:30
Later than I might have, but I waited for the temp to rise above 50
I-80 west into Salt Lake City is one of my favorite rides
Good roads, light traffic, about 40 miles, downhill all the way
Evanston is about 6,900 feet and SLC is about 4,200 feet
and the geology is just outstanding
Along the way it passes by the Echo Reservoir
along side of which there is a view turnout

The morning is clear and bright although still very chilly
Temps started out cold, 52, and remained below 64 all day.
With my leather jacket and gloves for the cold,
photos are too difficult to take while riding in traffic
So few today
There was a sign that I was going near Park City
There is a HD dealer there for which I have a chip
but have not visited so no shirt or pin
Of course, I had to stop at this small, downtown boutique shop

There was the cutest, friendliest little dog guarding the door

Looking up and down the street
I do not like the freeway system around Salt Lake City
Seems like you have to go out of your way to get anywhere
and the traffic is always heavy and constant road work
But I have never been to Harley-Davidson of Salt Lake City

A run-of-the-mill shop, but they have a ton of t-shirts
Between Salt Lake City and Wendover
there is over 120 miles of basically nothing but salt
and more and more and more distance
Fortunately, the speed limit is at first 80 and then 75
and the traffic is not too bad
As I started out along the Salt Lake,
I realized I had not yet had lunch
so I pulled off at Lake Port for a McD Egg McMuffin

I chose not to fuel up because the computer said I had plenty
of range still available
There is a rest stop along the salt flats
I realized that I was almost all the way through Utah
and I did not yet have a qualifying photo for the state

This has been a very wet year and the salt has surface water in large pools
After another 30 miles or so,
it dawned on me that the computer is calculating remaining range
by taking into account the gas milage so far on the current tank.
I had just spent the first half of this tank getting
unbelievable milage because it was all downhill.
In reality, it looked like I really did not have enough
to get to Wendover.  I got very concerned
There are no towns along the way and almost no places to stop

Fortunately, there was a hole-in-the wall gas station
with unbelievably high prices.  So I bit and I fueled up
Wendover, UT and West Wendover, NV are really the same city
but in different states.
Casinos on the Nevada side of the border
Normal businesses and parking lots in Utah
Not much of interest for me so I did not stop
Wells is a funky, in a bad way, little city
I stopped at a Love's Travel Stop for a bit of a rest

In walked a fellow in a white denim kilt cut very wide and loose to his knees
The skirt had pockets like a normal pair of jeans
As I was leaving, another fellow came out with a silly grin on his face
and said "Good thing he's not on a motorcycle"
I reached Elko and headed over to the
Gold Rush Harley-Davidson only to find them closed on Mondays
Oh well, tomorrow morning
For an "E" County, I visited Elko County Courthouse

On the front steps they have a pair of cowboy boots, fancy painted
I checked-in to the Best Western Elko Inn
and they upgraded me to a large suite

Judging by the jacuzzi in the bedroom, this must be a honeymoon suite
Now, all I need is...
